Security Search Economics · Capture vs search

Before you buy more servers, get a plan you can defend.

For SOC, MSP and MSSP leaders approving $100,000+ a year in Elasticsearch or OpenSearch security spend.

The amount you retain does not, by itself, tell you how much search compute you need. Our assessment measures the workload and identifies where retention, ingestion or search performance actually sets the limit.

Fixed fee agreed upfront · seven consecutive observation daysDefined clusters, tenants and workloads. Setup, analysis and readout timing agreed separately.

Capture + retention

What arrives and must remain available?

More monitored Windows machines, servers, cloud services and identity systems can increase captured records and required retained history.

  • Windows events
  • Server logs
  • Cloud and identity logs
Capture and retention should be assessed as the environment changes.

Assess capture, retention and search performance against the agreed workload.

What you leave with

A ranked decision, not another untested sizing assumption.

What to change

Rank candidate changes by estimated monthly cost impact and security consequences.

What to keep

Identify where a proposed change may not justify its effort, cost or risk.

What to protect

Identify capacity and retained evidence that support requirements you must preserve.

The SOC Search Capacity & Cost Assessment reviews ingest, indexing, compute, storage, lifecycle and licensing. Tiering is one part of that decision.

Keep the architecture, change it or add capacity as the evidence supports. No production changes by default; implementation and deeper validation are separately approved and scoped. Estimates are not guaranteed savings.

Illustrative concept, not measured customer data or a sizing calculator. Your request starts a fit, timing and scope discussion, not a booking or purchase.

SOC Search Capacity & Cost Assessment

Answer both questions for your own estate.

Seven consecutive days of observation, followed by analysis and readout, produce:

  • A workload profile and capacity findings, including evidence and confidence limits
  • Cost and right-sizing scenarios, distinguishing reductions now, at renewal and headroom for growth
  • A validation roadmap with prerequisites, risks, acceptance criteria and rollback considerations

A week may miss incident or month-end peaks. Available historical metrics and known peaks inform confidence; missing evidence may require further validation. Automated hot-tier measurement currently runs on Elasticsearch; the OpenSearch collection approach is agreed separately. Tiering and licensing differ by platform.

Who this is for

MSPs, MSSPs and SOC teams spending $100,000+ a year on Elasticsearch or OpenSearch

Licence, cloud and servers, counted across all customer clusters, or about to commit that much in new capacity. Typical sources: Windows machines and servers, cloud logs, identity systems, network and security devices.

Well under $100,000 a year and not adding capacity? This is not the right fit.
